Central Park Epilogue: The Race is Over

NYC Marathon Course Section: Miles 26.2+

After finishing the New City Marathon runners are greeted with mylar blankets, and race swag including snacks like pretzels and Gatorade. Best of all the New York Road Runners volunteers also don the newly minted marathoners with their race medals. Loved ones aren’t allowed inside the finish area so runners must waddle through the herd to get to the reunion areas outside the park in order to find friends and family. In the past there was no escaping the bag check bottleneck created when runners collect bags they checked in Staten Island. Nowadays, there’s an option to bypass bag check in order to get out of the park a little faster.

Marathoners Rocking New York Song:

Track #18: Central Park Epilogue

Time: 5:16

Tempo: 180

Treadmill Elevation: 0.0

NYC Marathon Course Section: Miles 26.2+ - The waddle out of Central Park.

After crossing the finish line everything is a blur for Sheena in Marathoners Rocking New York. The volunteers encourage her to keep moving because it’s easy to fall into a daze and just stop. Emotions well up that she didn’t expect. She feels so humbled and completely exhausted by the experience. She is also surprised to feel a little let down. She’d built this moment up in her mind so much. The thing she’d been working so hard on for so long is now over. But once she’s had a chance to collect herself she begins to feel the swell of pride and euphoria. This is her biggest accomplishment yet. Now she has a better understanding of what it feels like to meet a goal with all of its highs and lows. She’s ready to apply this to other areas of her life and take on the next phase. One chapter ends and a new one begins.

Central Park Epilogue Lyrics:

It’s over, it’s over

Over, over

It’s over, it’s over

I did it. I finished

Over, over

What will I do now?

No one can take this. No can take this away. No one can take it from me

Over, over

But what will I do now?

THE RACE IS OVER

VERSE

The race is over now it’s time to party

Gimme my medal and let’s get started

Marathoners Rocking New York is the rock’n’roll-fueled journey of a 70’s punk loving young woman named Sheena. She’s on the cusp of turning 30 with nothing to show for it. Her rock star dreams are not coming true. She succeeded at the downtown party lifestyle but not at keeping a band together. After stumbling on the New York City Marathon with friends, Sheena accepts a drunken dare to run it the following year. To her surprise, and everyone else’s she actually does the training (with a little help) and makes it to the start line on time.

Sheena runs the marathon without music, so Marathoners Rocking New York is the guitar-driven soundtrack going on in her mind as she navigates the course. The songs are influenced by the early punk movement in 1970’s New York with bands like the Ramones, Blondie, The Patti Smith Group, and Television. The album is in an excellent tempo for running playlists and a useful tool for marathon training that can be downloaded through iTunes.
