The Queensboro Bridge Song: I Wanna Go Fast!

NYC Marathon Course Section: Queensboro Bridge, Miles 15-16

The Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge is the third bridge and the third really big hill along the New York City Marathon course. Unlike on the other two bridges, the fatigue is generally more noticeable for the runners. The Verrazano comes very early in the and the Pulaski is relatively short, but the Queensboro is long and at a high mileage that most runners only reach during marathon training.  Also, after all the great crowd support in Queens the lack of spectators is really noticeable on the Queensboro Bridge. It feels long and quiet. If you are prepared for it, you can consider it another section to collect your thoughts, check in, and focus on your form. The best advice would be: don’t give up, lean into the hill and try to take it as comfortably as possible.

Marathoners Rocking New York Song:

Track #10: The Queensboro Bridge Song

Time: 1:56

Tempo: 180 bpm

Treadmill Elevation: 4.0

NYC Marathon Course Section: Miles 15-16, The Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge

From Manhattan this is sometimes called the 59th Street Bridge, famous for the “Feelin’ Groovy” song by Simon and Garfunkel. “The Queensboro Bridge Song” is Sheena’s answer to “Slow down, you’re moving too fast.” She is a punk coming of age in the 70’s and doesn’t want to be seen as a hippy. She wants to experience the world how it is with all her young adult angst. She wants to rock hard. However, it must be said, it is not wise to take the Queensboro Bridge too fast since it is 10 miles before the finish line of the New York City Marathon!

The Queensboro Bridge Song Lyrics:

CHORUS

Don’t wanna slow down, don’t wanna slow down

I can make it last, yea, I can make this last

But I want to go fast cuz I like it fast

VERSE 1

At any pace, my steps are quick

But I’m not backing down, I’m leaning on into it

CHORUS

VERSE 2

Oh, I’m not tired, I could go all day

I’m not gonna stop and I’m not gonna pay

CHORUS

VERSE 3

Life’s not easy, not free and breezy

So I’m not gonna be, no you’re not getting that from me

CHORUS VARIATION

Don’t wanna slow down, don’t wanna slow down, don’t wanna slow down, don’t wanna slow down, don’t wanna slow down, I wanna go fast! But I gotta make it last, make it last last last…

10 more miles and I’ve run a marathon

Marathoners Rocking New York is the rock’n’roll-fueled journey of a 70’s punk loving young woman named Sheena. She’s on the cusp of turning 30 with nothing to show for it. Her rock star dreams are not coming true. She succeeded at the downtown party lifestyle but not at keeping a band together. After stumbling on the New York City Marathon with friends, Sheena accepts a drunken dare to run it the following year. To her surprise, and everyone else’s she actually does the training (with a little help) and makes it to the start line on time.

Sheena runs the marathon without music, so Marathoners Rocking New York is the guitar-driven soundtrack going on in her mind as she navigates the course. The songs are influenced by the early punk movement in 1970’s New York with bands like the Ramones, Blondie, The Patti Smith Group, and Television. The album is in an excellent tempo for running playlists and a useful tool for marathon training that can be downloaded through iTunes.
